🇦🇺 Powerful and mineral cab from Australia, super tasty!
The Kay Brothers Estate @kay_bros was established in 1890. It is the oldest in the Australian McLaren Vale region to be still in family ownership today. Located about 35 kilometers southwest of Adelaide, it is at the heart of the country's viticulture. As with many historic properties, Herbert and Frederick Kay started out as winegrowers and followed trends over the decades (in 1920, for example, over 70% of the harvest was marketed as fortified wines).
And this until the 1960s, when the first stone was laid for the transformation into a modern winery. This conversion took place without pulling up the old vines. This is how the oldest vineyard on the estate is already 125 years old! Its area of only 22 hectares is extremely small compared to the standards of Australia.
The estate focuses on sustainability, biodiversity and soil health across the property. This allows the winery to run the vineyard more organically while making the vines more resilient to disease and drought conditions.
Vinification & Maturation: Grapes were manually harvested in March 2017. After ten days of maceration on their skin, grapes were pressed in a basket press (commissioned in 1928) and then fermented in small open vats. Once racked, the wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels.

Pronounced aromas of black cherry, cassis, blackberry, blackcurrant, violet, mint, eucalyptus, chocolate, clove, tobacco, and cedar.
【👅Palate】
Pronounced aromas similar to the nose, very complex with rich dark fruits aromas combined with mint, salt and discrete and enjoyable spicy / oak notes. Medium+ tannin, High alcohol, medium acidity, full body.
Mouthfeel is really coarse, with firm powdery tannin, a mineral structure, a smooth texture, it feels elegant and powerful at the same time. The finish is spicy, salty and really persistent.
【🍷 Conclusion】
Beautiful cab, fresh and mineral, fruity and elegant, but coarse, strong and with a lot of personality at the same time, a fantastic wine.
