【📝Brief intro】
🇪🇸 A lot of Mencia, a bit of craziness, it’s Demencia!
We were introduced to Demencia wines at Vinoteca La Parrala in León by Anais and Alfonso, who made us taste the excellent Cachican, a small production wine made from a mix of Merenzao, Godello, Doña Blanca, Brancellao, Mencía, Garnacha Tintorera, Tempranillo.
They offered to take us on their day off to visit the Demencia winery, which we couldn't refuse. We were welcomed on site by Nacho León, the manager of the bodega. I must say that the visit was incredible, thanks to Nacho, who is an absolutely fascinating character and who loves to share his know-how and his passion. At Demencia everything is absolutely done by hand, from the vine to the sticking of the labels on the bottles, which represents a gigantic job as you can imagine.
I greatly appreciate Nacho’s approach to viticulture, his desire to create wines that reflect their terroir, genuine author and artisan wines that are totally out of the ordinary, great respect for the environment, very little intervention, the use of wild yeasts, the will to preserve and recover different grapes varieties from the region, the small-scale production, his will to always innovate while preserving the history of the region.
About the wines, they are just incredible, he made us try almost all his wines, I fell in love with his Demencia Villegas (22 months in French oak barrel) made with Mencia grapes coming from a vineyard in Valtuille de Abajo and his Godello (4 months in barrel), which I consider being one of the very best Godello I have had the pleasure to taste. A must-go if you ever have the opportunity. You won’t regret it.
